Our Accessibility Commitment
The Schlegel‑UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) is committed to providing accessible services, information, and communications to all members of the public.
We welcome feedback on how we can improve accessibility and are happy to provide information in accessible formats or with communication supports, upon request.
The Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) is a scent-reduced environment. In consideration of the access, safety, and well-being of all individuals, we ask that you refrain from using scented products when visiting our building.
How We Consult on Accessibility Requests
When you request an accessible format or communication support, RIA follows the process:
- Acknowledgement: We will confirm receipt of your request and provide an estimated delivery timeline.
- Consultation: We will work with you to understand your specific accessibility requirements and preferred format.
- Assessment: We will determine how best to provide the requested information while ensuring accuracy and usability.
- Delivery: We will provide the information in the agreed-upon format within a reasonable timeframe.
- Follow-up: We will check that the information meets your needs and welcome feedback to improve accessibility.

Accessible Formats and Communication Supports
RIA can provide information and resources in accessible formats or with communication supports upon request. Examples include:
- Electronic text or Word/PDF documents compatible with screen readers
- Captioned video or multimedia content
- Large print documents
- Plain language summaries
- Braille documents
If you need information in a specific format or require support, we will work with you to determine the most appropriate format.
Visiting the RIA
We are located at 250 Laurelwood Drive, Building 4, Waterloo, ON. Our facility is the glass building situated between the Retirement Home and the Long-Term Care Home.

Parking
- Designated accessible parking spaces are available near the main entrance. For visitors with mobility issues, please contact us in advance to make specific parking arrangements.
- Standard parking for our building is located across Laurelwood Drive at the YMCA parking lot. Take our first left as you enter the lot to their facility.
- Bicycle parking is available at the front and back entrances of our building.
Transit
- The site is accessible via GRT Route 13. Please visit the GRT website for current route information.
Accessible Amenities
We have incorporated several features to ensure our facility is welcoming and functional for all:
- Automatic sliding doors at our main entrance provide easy, barrier-free access.
- We offer accessible, single-use, all-gender washrooms on most floors, featuring appropriate sink and counter heights with knee clearance.
- A dedicated respite room is available to provide a supportive environment for sensory regulation.
- Our facility features wide, clear hallways with minimal obstacles, and light, simple flooring to reduce disorientation. High-contrast interior doors and frames assist with navigation.
- A variety of seating options located throughout the building to offer comfort and choice.
- Meeting room options with Hearing Assist technology for folks who use a T-coil.
Other Aids
- We welcome the use of assistive devices (such as canes, crutches, and hearing aids, etc.). We ensure our goods, services, and facilities are accessible to individuals using these devices.
- We welcome persons living with a disability accompanied by a service animal.
- A person living with a disability who is accompanied by a support person is welcome to have that person accompany them at the RIA. Admission fees for support persons will be waived if applicable.
