Ontario Renews Education Fund for Long-Term Care Team Members

Jun 18, 2024 | Ontario CLRI, RIA Announcements

Personal Support Worker Education Fund Available in 2024–25

The Ontario CLRI at the RIA announces renewed funding for training direct-care team members in long-term care (LTC) through the Personal Support Worker Education Fund in Long-Term Care (PWS Fund), funded by the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care.

The PSW Fund provides tuition and backfill to train LTC team members through virtual and in-person continuing education that develops and fosters a skilled, motivated and resilient workforce.

Two exciting educational offerings have been added to the PSW Fund this year:

  • Better Together Dementia Care (pilot by invitation only in fall 2024)
  • From Awareness to Action: Create a Culture of Belonging (available in fall 2024)

Better Together Dementia Care (BTDC) was created by award-winning memory care training experts and healthcare professionals with extensive practical experience. It is evidence-based and integrates theoretical and experiential knowledge with mentorship support. The objective of BTDC is to enhance understanding of dementia, its impact on individuals and strategies for managing the associated challenges specifically in LTC home settings.

The format of the BTDC program includes one full day training session with practical tested exercises and case studies followed by one half-day of onsite group mentorship training. Participants will also receive access to videos and telephone support from training team members to discuss challenging cases, as needed.

This year, BTDC is being piloted by invitation only.

The other six education options continue to be part of the fund:

LTC homes can enroll online in all training programs. Tuition and backfill pay is available for any team member. Learn more about the fund and program training by visiting the PSW Education Fund website.

Launched in 2017, the PSW Education Fund has trained more than 23,000 personal support workers and other long-term care home team members across the province.
