Alfred Yu is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Waterloo. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering (with Distinction) at the University of Calgary in 2002, and received his MASc and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto in 2004 and 2007. In between, he completed a corporate internship at Philips Research North America. Following his graduate studies, he moved to Asia to start his academic career at the University of Hong Kong, where he was the founding PI of HKU Biomedical Ultrasound Laboratory. He relocated his research group to Waterloo in 2015 and joined the ECE Department as an Associate Professor. He is now a Full Professor at Waterloo and the Director of the Laboratory on Innovative Technology in Medical Ultrasound (LITMUS). Professor Yu has a long-standing research interest in ultrasound imaging and therapeutics. He received the 2016 IEEE Ultrasonics Early Career Investigator Award in recognition of his contributions to this research field. He also received the Frederic Lizzi Early Career Award from the International Society of Therapeutic Ultrasound in 2017 in recognition of his substantial contributions to the advancement of therapeutic ultrasound. In addition, he is the recipient of the Ontario Early Researcher Award. Professor Yu is a Senior Member of IEEE and AIUM, and he is the Past Chairperson of the IEEE-EMBS Hong Kong Chapter (2010-2012). He is now an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control and an Editorial Board Member of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. He is also the current Chair of the Medical Ultrasound Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium.
