TV Show & Years on Air: Mom (2013 – current)
How long have you been a Young Carer? Since I can remember.
Who do you care for and how? My mom had me when she was just sixteen, and has been battling alcohol and drug addictions my whole life. When my younger brother Roscoe came along I took care of him when our mother couldn’t. I fed him, changed his diapers, and was the most reliable person in his life, especially after his dad and our mom got divorced.
How has being a Young Carer affected your life? When my mom gave up drinking and drugs and was ready to take on more responsibility at home, we struggled over who was in charge of Roscoe. It was hard for me to adjust to not having to care for him in the same way anymore. I also got pregnant when I was sixteen, and while I gave my baby up for adoption to give it a chance at a better life I haven’t quite been the same since. Now that I’m nineteen I am dating a 42 year old because it is nice to be the one being taken care of for once.
